Thread for Beginners

Post by Lusst on Wed Jan 04, 2012 6:58 am

Before I begin, here are some basics:

Get on a full body program that centers around big barbell lifts. Many people here have had great results using Starting Strength/Rippetoe's 5x5 program, but there are also other similar programs like Bill Starr's and
a myriad of many others.

Pick one and follow them to the letter for those 8 weeks. While you're on them make sure you're eating and sleeping more while keeping cardio/conditioning to a minimum.

If you have any questions concerning general lifting, feel free to post here and ask away.

Hello Freeman,

Good question.

For this I turn to Dr. ZeroNutrition on the matter:

"If it's causing you pain, obviously you should do something different. You may want to work on your wrist flexibility to keep elbows out and see how that feels. You can also try the cross your heart grip and that eliminates a lot of the flexibility needs.

Upper back soreness is because you are tilting forward and you are hopefully fighting that. It's normal but as you keep working on front squats and get keep upright you shouldn't have it anymore."

Hope this helps.

Mr. Lusst,

Do you have any advice for older lifters that often step on Legos while walking out squats and have spine cancer?

Hello pluglas,

My advice would be to quit while you're ahead.

I'm 5'9", 162 lbs. Should I bulk or cut? I don't want to lose my abs, but I want to get bigger.

At 5'9", you should really look into getting taller.

My colleague has a book for sale which lets you in on the ancient secrets of the Wahini Tribe of Southern New Guinea, who average 8-9 feet tall. For just $5, you will be able to PM him for the link to purchase this exciting new book.

A few things that can probably help if you can't really do any now:

1. Kipping - use leg drive to get the rep.
2. Holds at the top position - if you can get yourself to the top of the bar (even if it involves a chair) then you can work to simply hold yourself at the top of the bar for as long as you can.
3. Work the negatives. Get yourself to the top, and simply try to lower as slowly as you can.
